Monuriki is a Coral reef island located at the western end of the Fiji archipelago in Mamanuca. It is a small uninhabited island and is volcanic in nature measuring approximately1 km in length and 600 meters in width. Monuriki is right in the middle of the endless waters of the South Pacific, profuse with the breathtaking natural beauty of flora and fauna. The coasts of the island, are surrounded on each side by a coral reef, sand, and cliffs of volcanic rocks, lagoons, and several small white beaches.

Geology of the area

The uninhabited Monuriki Island lies within the Mamanuca group in the province of Nadroga, western Fiji. This Island reaches its peak at 178 m above sea level. Monuriki is part of the Atolls islands and is related to a group of three islets in the larger group of islands known as the Mamanuca Islands. This coral and the volcanic island is the smallest islet and the southernmost of a small group of three islets, west of Tavua. The terrain includes volcanic rocks, lagoons, palm trees, a pine forest, a cave, and several small white sand beaches.

Around Monuriki there are some islands of the Mamanuca archipelago. To the north of Monuriki is the island of Monu, from which it is separated by about 600 meters of the sea. The island of Yanuya is located 2.5 km northeast. The island of Tavua is located less than 5 km east of Monuriki. The small island of Matamanoa is located less than 4 km southeast of Monuriki.

Monuriki Island where was castaway filmed

Island of Monuriki Fiji became famous for being the place where the film “Cast Away” was filmed. This film is produced by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks, Helen Hunt, and Nick Searcy. The film name is always confused with the small island ‘Monuriki Castaway’ that is situated on Matamanoa island. The film tells the story of an employee of the FedEx delivery company stuck, after a plane crash, on an uninhabited island in the South Pacific. The film tells of the shipwrecked attempts to survive on the island using the remains of the cargo of his plane. This film was a commercial success, and in 2001 Tom Hanks was nominated for Best Actor at the 73rd Academy Awards for his performance.

It is the location of the third-largest population of the endemic Fijian crested iguana and Sea Turtles. The iguana is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List.
